EARLY ASSESSMENT

Why Early Intervention Matters

Ineffective early intervention profoundly affects children’s learning success and well-being

Starting behind in the early years means staying behind – for individual children and for an education system as a whole. A child’s development in the first few years of life significantly predicts his or her later success in education and ongoing levels of happiness and well-being. The most effective investment governments can make to enhance education and later life outcomes is to provide a strong start in children’s early years.
“International and Early Learning and Child Well-being Study ”, OECD, March 19, 2020
[Today,] too many children and young people receive inadequate, ineffective and inequitable support, potentially impacting on their educational outcomes, their employability and their mental health (…) Understanding of speech, language and communication should be embedded in initial qualifications and continuing professional development for all relevant practitioners
“Bercow Report, 10 Years on” - on the state of provision for children’s speech, language and communication needs in England, 2018.
Children with better receptive language skills at age 5 were more likely to have positive mental health outcomes at age 32 as well as lower malaise (e.g. depression, psychological distress) at age 42.
“The Power and Promise of Early Learning”, OECD Education Working Paper, 15th November 2018
